Measures were taken to facilitate later research on advanced vertical dynamics control concepts. The semi-active suspension system uses an external magnetic bypass valve to control the oil flow inside the damper thus allowing the continuous control of the damper force within the force limits. The fast dynamics of the magnet bypass valve enables control of the damper even up to and beyond the wheel resonance frequency.
Moreover, acceleration sensors were mounted on the four lower wishbones and in the four corners of the ROboMObil chassis together with an electronic control unit for the semi-active dampers. The dampers were gauged in a special test bench to determine their basic damping characteristics in dependence of the applied electric damper current.
